Advice Centre Threatened with Closure

Thurrock CAB, the local advice charity, is threatened with closure in 2015 as Thurrock council officers propose a 100% cut in the funding support that the council provides to the bureau.

The current proposal before councillors is to remove funding support from the local bureau which will mean that it closes in March 2015 with the loss of 12 jobs and over 7,000 residents unable to access free, confidential, independent, quality assured advice in the borough for the first time in nearly 40 years

Trustees, staff and volunteers were stunned to find out about the cut when someone alerted them to papers posted on the council’s website for a council meeting in July, no one from the council has contacted the bureau to discuss, negotiate or explain why they have singled out the bureau for closure.

The impact on Thurrock residents and the local economy of the proposed loss of funding is detailed in the documents located here.

Should you disagree with the council’s proposal please contact your local councillor to discuss. https://www.thurrock.gov.uk/current-councillors
